Excited by the heavy blues jams they were hearing from Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin and others, Vanilla Fudge drummer Vinnie Appice and bassist Tim Bogert founded Cactus to explore their own take on heavy blues rock. The band is completed by guitarist Jim McCarty and former Amboy Dukes singer Rusty Day. It should be noted, Rusty Day is a legendary badass outlaw rock ‘n’ roller who could belt that shit out for days!
Bogert and Alice had to flex their Vanilla Fudge clout with the label folks to get this album out. Legend is the label people hated McCarty and thought Day was an unprofessional. Atco rejected the first mix of the album for being too “too raw” and when it did come out, the bad had to push to get it promoted. Cactus managed to hold out for a few more good albums but this first one is pretty stompin’.
Original 1970 US pressing. Sort of remember finding it, but can’t remember exactly where. Solid player though!
