Cosmic Jokers (1974)

The Cosmic Jokers were less of a band and more of a concept hatched by Die Kosmischen Kurier label founder Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser in 1972. The collective was largely made of German musicians and personalities of the 70s psychedelic and esoteric philosophies scenes. Its purpose (from Kaiser’s viewpoint) was to create cosmic music in thanks to the universe for LSD… or something like that, hah.

However, Kaiser did assemble a formidable “tribe” including Jurgen Dollase, Manuel Göttsching, Klaus Schulze, Harald Grosskoph, and producer/engineer Dieter Dierks. The thing is, the musicians involved did not know or authorize their release as individual albums and many found out by hearing the recordings in record shops or other places. The fallout from that is too much to get in here, but makes for some good reading.

There is way too much to unpack and so many stories attached to the Cosmic Jokers that I’m finding I’m not totally prepared to get into it, haha. So, in the meantime…yeah.

2021 reissue on original German label Die Kosmischen Kuriere. It’s awesome.
