Dark Quarterer (1987)

I feel like I’ve known about Italy’s Dark Quarterer forever, but never really sat down and listened to them until recently and I’m still not sure what to make of them. Saw that Shadow Kingdom had a reissue of their self-titled debut out and went for it. Their early period is labeled as “epic heavy metal” and I suppose that applies but their sound is unusual in a way I am struggling a bit to describe at the moment. Epic, a little theatrical, sonically smooth, but not at all overproduced… and doom! There’s a subtle doom vibe on this album makes for  a slightly foreboding feel. If you’ve read this far, you should definitely check it out.

2023 reissue on US label Shadow Kingdom Records. Really nice gatefold packaging and LP sounds good. The mastering on this album has always been really quiet, and this vinyl edition seems the same. It’s not too quiet, but definitely needs a bit of volume to appreciate.
