By 1979 Kiss was struggling to stay relevant. Audiences were changing, they were dry on ideas, and the fear of obsolescence was acute. What to do? Hire outside writers and give the whole thing a disco feel, of course. I mean, honestly, as a business strategy in 1978-79, this would be easily considered a logical move.
Unfortunately, the band and all involved somehow missed the anti-disco sentiment among Kiss’ own fanbase. I was nine years old when this all went down and I can still remember it was Kiss shirts galore and a week later, everyone was saying they sucked now and “went disco”. Shit, I didn’t even hear this album until I bought it in the early 1990s and didn’t even realize it was the infamous “disco” album, haha. What’s funny to me is that it isn’t even over the top disco, it’s just a more radio friendly Kiss and it’s cheesy… but all Kiss is cheesy. It’s Kiss!
