Necromandus - Orexis Of Death & Live (1973/2010)

A UK heavy rock band that gigged heavily with the country in the early 1970s and were previously known as Hot Aping Water, then Taurus, before settling on Necromandus. In ‘72 they caught the eye of Tony Iommi who became their manager and landed an album deal with Vertigo Records. They recorded Orexis Of Death in ‘73 with Iommi as producer and even adds some guitar to the title track. It’s a stellar album all the way! Unfortunately, guitarist Barry Dunnery left the band soon after and Vertigo shelved the record. The rest of the band split soon after.

Interesting side note: The first time Ozzy Osbourne left Black Sabbath (briefly) in 1977, he intended to start his vision of Blizzard Of Ozz with the Necromandus band, including Dunnery, drummer Frank Hall, and bassist Dennis McCarten. However, project never got off the ground and Ozzy soon returned to Sabbath.

It wasn’t until 1991 when a partly different version of the album was released on vinyl only under the title of Quicksand Dream. Enough buzz led to a more complete 1996 version with the Orexis of Death title and a separately released live set title “Live” on the Audio Archives label.

This 2010 Rise Above Records edition collects both studio and live into a 2xLP release with fantastic new artwork and packaging. An absolute gem of a record!
