Necrophagist - Epitaph (2004)

I think that I’m generally a pretty crappy fan of death metal. I had initially avoided the moment at the end of the 1980s and into the 1990s after living the thrash movement and being interested in different stuff as that scene fell to the 1990s. I thought gore lyrics were dumb and didn’t understand the muddy sound at the time. I’ve come around, but I’m still not far down that rabbit hole, except for the weird sub-genre known as technical death metal, this is my kryptonite.

Enter Necrophagist. Technically, a band, but really the brainchild of guitarist Muhammad Suiçmez. Their first album was entirely recorded by Muhammad (all instruments!!!) after the first incarnation of Necrophagist fell apart. He then assembled a new band and managed to record their sophomore album, Epitaph. The playing is jaw-dropping and the tunes are composed well enough to make this a fantastic fucking spin. Sounds like this lineup fell apart too and rumor has it that Muhammad actually quit guitar all together, which would be a shame as dude was shitting copious amounts of talent. Talented drummer from this iteration of the band, Hannes Grossmann, would go onto to join Triptykon.

2019 US repress from Relapse Records.
