Riverge - Stand In Fear Of Nothing: Early Years Discography (2022)

To be sure, I only recently got into checking out these long running Japanese thrash maniacs. Despite a long running career going back to the mid-1980s, these guys didn’t release their first full-length album until 2007. Despite not hitting that milestone during their initial 80s run, they did release multiple demos, live recordings, compilation appearances, and two proper EPs. All of these are essentially collected into this glorious retrospective.

Musically, the early stuff has a punk feel but with a true thrash metal heart. The thrash sound only becomes more prominent with each recording as the band becomes a thrash juggernaut. A major part of their sound, singer Shoji has a bat-shit crazy delivery and seems to avoid hitting any actual musical notes in a way that is surprisingly effective. I always loved how 80s thrash had no pre-defined vocal style and Shoji is a solid example of that.  I sort took a chance on picking this up and not really knowing wha to expect, it have found this to be a fantastic set and can see myself blasting this stuff often.

2022 release on Italian label F.O.A.D Records. 3xLP +CD set includes all of their 1980s demos, a live demo, both EPs, a rehearsal recording, a live EP, some one-off tracks and two full live shows. Packaging is a nice a tri-fold gatefold with photos. Also includes a nice booklet featuring the art from the demos, the EPs, etc. and a few band photos. Very nice!
