Samson’s debut album beat most of the NWOBHM moment by releasing their debut album in June of 1979, almost a year before a slew of major releases of the emerging genre. Seems like the band was just shoring up their lineup by the time of release with guitarist/band namesake Paul Samson carry guitar and lead vocals, Thunderstick on drums, and bassist Chris Aylmer joining to play (some?) bass on the LP. Gillan Band bassist and Head On producer John McCoy also has bass, but unsure what how many or what tracks those are . Also in the band at time of release is new singer Bruce Bruce, better known as Bruce Dickinson. He’s fully credited here, but does not actually perform on the LP. There are some track re-recorded on future reissues, but not this original version.
It’s a decent NWOBH album, but still very much rooted in 1970s rock vibes. Paul Samson, while a perfectly competent singer, pales in comparison to Dickinson too, of course… but no judgement there as I we all get to hear Dickinson front the band on their next album Head On. In the meantime, this is some cool early NWOBHM and nice jams.
Original 1979 UK pressing on Laser. No kooky stories with this one. Unexpected used fund at a local shop and in good condition.
