Winterhawk - Revival (1982)

Chicago’s Winterhawk initially formed in 1977 and released their debut album “Revival” on indie label Lambda Records. Not really metal, but more in the hard progressive rock vein as Rush, even though they don’t really sound at all like Rush. Very good playing and the songs are tight and well composted with fantasy themed subject matters, generally.

While Revival is a really good record, I’m not sure how much of an impact it made at the time and the band faded into obscurity. Years later the album seemed to be growing in popularity as next generations discovered it on the web and has since been reissued on CD and LP a number of times, with this High Roller pressing being one the most recent. It’s an odd album in a lot of ways and a little hard to classify. They certainly would appeal to metal folks, but this is more hard rock with progressive leanings. Always a great listen to my ears!

2021 German reissue on High Roller Records. High Roller does an absolute superb jobs with metal and obscure hard rock reissues such as this. Sonically and physically, it’s just fantastic.
