British Steel (1984)

A little embarrassed that this is the first compilation album I am posting about and that it’s this lackluster thing, haha! I literally found this at a record show today and I’m happy I picked it up, but it’s a goofy comp. By 1984, the NWOBHM scene had more or less run its course. Front runner bands like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard were well established, while most others were falling apart or losing ground fast. But what the heck with this collection?

Most notable here are Motörhead with the an already 4 years old Ace Of Spades and two Venom cuts. Then there’s Hawkwind with Kings Of Speed which sits just before Venom’s Witching Hour and that’s such a hilariously placed pair of tracks to me. I absolutely love Hawkwind, but I don’t know anyone that would have called them heavy metal in 1984. Otherwise  of note here are Alaska, a very 80s radio rock/pop band featuring former Whitesnake axeman Bernie Marsden. Then there’s Jess Cox, original frontman of the Tygers Of Pan Tang… his track is pretty lightweight as well.

Less notable are Bronz, Rox, Tysondog, and Twelfth Night. All very much hard rock radio type stuff of the time and not anything to write home about. A little disappointed at how watered down this collection turned out to be, but whatevs. I’ll still give it a spin every now and then.
