Clutch - Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes, And Undeniable Truths (1993)

Clutch initially came up in the Maryland/Washington DC scene in the late 1980s and early 90s as a hardcore punk informed, sort of post-metal band who’s initial sound wasn’t too far from bands like Helmet at the time. They have since evolved their sound a lot, but this early stuff is pretty awesome.

When I was in film school circa 1995 a guy named Sam that I casually knew asked to borrow a Soundgarden Badmotorfinger cassette that I had made (from my records) which included all of their singes/b-sides, etc. and offered me a store bought copy of this tape (no cover) as collateral. I agreed and after an initial WTF moment, began to fall in love with this album. I didn’t see the guy for a few months and we eventually ran into each other at a party and agreed that we’d keep each other’s cassettes permanently as we were both so happy with the exchange, haha. And here I am in 2024 still digging this thing.

Brand new 2024 US reissue by Clutch on their own Weathermaker Music label. It’s a premium release with updated artwork presented with a cool foiled gatefold sleeve and beautifully mastered for vinyl.
