Cynic’s first album is absolutely brilliant and a total anomaly of the world of death metal in the early 1990s. Not that the scene wasn’t progressive (oh, it definitely was and is), but the sounds that Cynic were mining unique to them and represented, with their first album, a notable set away from death metal and into their own progressive direction. Unfortunately, the band folded soon after this and it wasn’t until 2008 before the band would release new music again… further developming the sound they have laid out here. Not just an incredibly important progressive metal album, it’s also fan-fucking-tastic.
2022 US reissue from Roadrunner Records. The album was remixed and reissued in 2023 as “Refocus” and I admit I haven’t yet heard it. Glad I landed this one last pressing before the changes were made, even if the revised version is good too.
