So, I’m a huge fan of Gong and especially any Daevid Allen fronted incarnation of the band. However, it’s Gong’s original run that I dig the most. This starts here with Magic Brother. Almost subdued by Gong standards, it’s still pretty wild in the vein of Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, if not a little bit more wonky. I’m not too sure I can offer an objective assessment of Gong as I’ve surely gone too far down the rabbit hole. If you like freaky hippie music that’s also insanely progressive and technical, you might want to check into ‘em.
My copy is a 1977 UK reissue on Charley. I landed this well traveled copy at a shop in London. It was initially pretty crackly which was disappointing, but I’ve run it through my ultrasonic cleaner a few time and it plays pretty pretty good now. Still has a tad bit surface noise, but at a way lower level than before.
