Going to see Voïvod tomorrow so spending a little time with some of their more recent releases of the current lineup. I’ve mentioned this before, but I am a massive fan of Voïvod since the times of RrröööaaarrR and their US tour with Celtic Frost in 1986. I sometimes fall out of sync with their direction and complain about the changes, but they always prove to be ahead of me and everything I start out not like, I eventually come around to. Their only “weak” era for me is the three albums with Jason Newsted, but even those are alright with me.
The Wake is the a pretty excellent album. Since Dan Mongrain’s entry into the band, they have delved back into the complex, heavy progressive type of metal at which they are best known, but not in a regressive way… just playing to their strengths and finally having the confidence to know they is where they are at their best and really, most innovative. The theme of the album is a vaguely detailed global event concerning secret experiments and some deep sea extraterrestrial presence. Ominous shit. Not sure I’d call this a proper concept album format, but there are overarching themes and feelings that evoke that feeling pretty organically. I love this album, honestly. Brilliant.
