Cathedral - The Ethereal Mirror (1993)

After leaving Napalm Death, singer Lee Dorrian founded Cathedral 1989 and (at the time) were an inverse of Napalm Death’s blistering pace. Their first album, 1991’s Forest Of Equilibrium was slooow, dark, and heavy! A landmark doom release. They began to shift towards a slightly more accessible sound with their Soul Sacrifice EP and followed with this full length platter. It’s still incredibly heavy, but the band are venturing into the stoner metal and psychedelic territory a bit. Stile shifting aside, the music is no less excellent.

2019 UK reissue on Earache. This is great, but many of Cathedral’s Earache era albums are long out of print and thought to get on vinyl, which is a damn shame.
