Having just dismissed singer Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover are barely in the band for a hot minute when this live group/orchestra album was recorded. Considering the lineup changes were intended to help the band lean into a heavier sound, it’s funny that they opted for this classical meets rock approach, conceived by Jon Lord, of course. It’s solid enough and the heavy rock parts are superb, but the two styles are not really intermingled that much and it feels a little weird going from one style to the other and back. Still a good album and certainly an oddity of the times.
