Manilla Road - Underground (1979)

Manilla Road hailed from Wichita, Kansas and had a pretty distinct and prolific run for a band that never really broke big, yet gained cult status as time went on. While they evolved quite a bit stylistically, they are primarily known as an epic heavy metal band. Lyrics are deep and cover all a lot of historical, fantasy, and science fiction themes. Musically, their songcraft and playing are great, but you can tell the band had limited access to high end production facilities by the typically bare bones recordings, which only further make them sound awesome to my ears.

Underground is their first studio demo. The three song cassette was sent out to radio stations in the Wichita area. It was thought that the tapes of this demo were lost forever until the band uncovered a studio master tape in 2015. A year later this was released on vinyl by High Roller Records with a fourth track that had never before been released. What’s amazing is how good the whole thing sounds! From the record to the songs. Shit’s pretty good!

2016 German pressing on High Roller Records.
