1996 was a fascinating era for Amorphis. The band was still rooted in death metal but was rapidly moving into a Finnish folk and prog metal direction. Elegy is, in a lot of ways, the peak of that initial phase. They brought in singer Pasi Koskinen who had a more melodic approach while guitarist/singer Tomi Kolvusaari continued with the death metal vox. The evolution of the music, combined with this split vocal approach seemed perfect for the time and Elegy is absolutely tits! Unique and fascinating album, if only a snapshot of the Amorphis timeline.
2023 US reissue on Relapse Records.
