Cynic has a fascinating evolutionary path. Starting as a brutal technical death metal act, they quickly began to trade nearly all of the overtly metallic elements of their sound for a purely progressive rock approach. Despite that shift, the band has remained closely aligned with the metal scene and it’s kind of a beautiful thing to behold. Carbon-Based Anatomy is an EP release between albums, but it’s essential and further maps out the unique path the band has taken. Makes for a nice Saturday afternoon spin at that.
