Cynic - The Portal Tapes (2012)

When Cynic disbanded in 1994, nearly the entire band regrouped under the moniker of Portal and recorded an album length demo in 1995. With Jason Gobel, Paul Masvidal, and Sean Reinert, the band is filled out by one-time Cynic bassist Chris Kringel and vocalist Aruba Abrams, who shares vocal duties with Masvidal. As you have surly surmised by now, this is not truly a Cynic album and the release gets a lot of hate from metal fans. Even Masvodal has expressed regret at rereleasing this under the Cynic moniker. So, despite all that shit, the demo is superbly recorded and isn’t that far from what Cynic are doing these days anyway, sans the female vox. I don’t listen to this a ton, but it’s a good album and certainly has a place in the overall story of Cynic.

2012 release on French label Season Of Mist. Not sure if this ever see another vinyl reissue, but it it does, it will likely not be as a Cynic album making this pressing a likely one-off.
