Darkestrah - Sary Oy (2004)

Darkestrah has long been one of those bands I enjoyed but was never able to turn anyone else into. I don’t think they ever achieved much in terms of popularity and are still going, I believe. Musically, the band is in the style of black metal with historical and pagan lyrical themes. Additionally, Darkestrah incorporates a significant amount of folk elements from their native Kyrgyzstan and it’s a huge part of what sets them apart from other bands. I am not sure I’d call Darkestrah an essential band, but I find them fascinating and enjoy what they do. Sary Oy was their only album actually recorded in Kyrgyzstan before the band relocated to Germany. Production value is very basic, but doesn’t hurt the listening experience (for me anyway).

2016 vinyl pressing from Canadian label Shaytan Productions and first time this has been released on vinyl.
