Wire - The Ideal Copy (1987)

Interestingly, The Ideal Copy is my very first exposure to Wire upon coming across this at a record show in the late 1980s for a couple of bucks. I was vaguely familiar with them as a “punk” band but this heavy metal teenager was not prepared for their sound at the time and shelved this copy for years after a single listen. Wire references and covers from other bands I was listening to finally got me into the band, particularly Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154, then later material like Send and Object 47. Only in the last few years have I been coming back to the band’s 1985-91 run and honestly, this album if fantastic. Very 80s post-wave, post-punk, experimental, goth? It’s incredibly immersive when you’re in the mood.

1987 US pressing on Enigma. Glad I held onto this all these years to allow my personal tastes catch up to my collection.
