Magma - Kobaïa (1970)

Also know as their self-tiled debut, this album launches a whole new sub-genre of rock that will be known as Zeuhl. Unlike anything else at the time, the music is rooted in jazz, fusion, and progressive rock. Later releases will further expand on to heavy rock territory, but jazz vibes are still strong at this point (and it’s awesome). Lyrical themes are doomsday and post-apocalyptic subject matter, though sung in a completely invented language called Kobaïan, which sounds a bit Germanic, but is something else entirely. This shit is not for everyone, but hot damn the band is on fire! Magma main man Christian Vander is a bit of a lunatic, but also a brilliant composer and drummer. Recommended if you are an adventurous soul.

2015 French reissue on Jazz Village. I went hard on these Magma reissues when they came out and they are superb.
