After a reunion tour of sorts, the band welcomed back original powerhouse drummer Corky Lane and added second guitarist David Perry. Along with West and Pappalardi, this is the lineup that we have on their final studio LP, Avalanche. It’s a solid record, though with less standout cuts than the previous studio albums.
After this cycle, Pappalardi would decide to retire from touring due to an acute hearing loss concerns (why the disbanded previously), and this time it would be permanent. Pappalardi would spend much of the 70s producing albums and some studio session work. Sadly, Felix Pappalardu was shot and killed in 1983 by his wife (and Mountain artist/collaborator) Gail Collins in their NYC flat. Collins claimed it was an accident, but was convicted of criminally negligent homicide and served about two years in prison.
