Sleep - Dopesmoker (2003)

Previously released in 1998 in an amended form under the title of Jerusalem. There is a lot of lore around the band’s recording of the album and allegedly using the bulk of their advance from London Records for weed, but what I do know is that the album was initially rejected by the label and Jerusalem was somehow a compromise. The complete version was eventually released by Tee Pee Records in 2003. I should mention, the album was intended as a single track with movements built in. The Jerusalem cut was 52:08. The Dopesmoker version is 1:03:31!

My copy is a 2012 US reissue on Southern Lord with the holographic foil jacket. I got this used for like $15 because the front cover had some scuffing, but it doesn’t bother me. The LPs sounds great! Dopesmoker takes up sides A, B, & C with side D featuring two live cuts; Sonic Titan and Holy Mountain. Great shit!
