I missed the boat on Exhorder back in the day. Slaughter In The Vatican came out when I was about 20 years old and I was moving away from thrash metal… for a while anyway. I had heard about them and it was alway positive, but it wasn’t untI’m way later when I read something about how Pantera had lifted their sound that I decided to dig into them. Firstly, that Pantera claim is BS… Exhorder have a completely, way more chaotic, sound. I suppose there are some similarities in the way Kyle Thomas and Phil Anselmo sing, but that’s a surface level similarity, at best. This album is sort of nuts. Total thrash, but thick, heavy, and a swirling nightmare of a listen. In other words, it rules.
2024 reissue on Music On Vinyl/Roadrunner Records. Literally just picked this up and couldn’t be happier about it.
