While it pales a little compared to the band’s epic Voyager album, Playground Of The Damned is beautifully crafted and maintains a raw, atmospheric sound, combining mythological and dark, fantastical themes with gritty guitar riffs and intricate storytelling. Manilla Road isn’t a band that you can measure by the usual metrics. What they do, they do in the face of adversity and are unique masters of their craft.
2023 German reissue on High Roller Records and it’s excellent.
