Into the Mirror Black is the band’s second and final album before their initial breakup. This record represents a significant evolution in their sound, showing a more mature, complex, and introspective approach than their debut. The album shifts towards a darker, more brooding style, blending power metal elements with progressive and thrash influences. Warrel Dane’s vocals are less high-pitched and more nuanced, adding depth to the album’s haunting themes. While this really is a fantastic album, the release came at a time of massive upheaval in the music industry, ironically due to the Seattle grunge explosion, pushing Sanctuary back out to the fringes, much more so than what would have happened if this was released a few years earlier or even much later. Bad timing, I suppose? Unfortunate as this really is a low key gem of an album.
2013 European reissue from Music On Vinyl/Epic and it’s quite good!
