Sanctuary - Refuge Denied (1988)

As a teenager, I was much more interested in thrash metal, hardcore punk, and the 1980s crossover scene. Aside from a few exceptions like Iron Maiden, I generally avoided bands with operatic vocal stylings and preferred less “melodic “ approaches. However, the band I was in back in the 80s had a number of mutual friends with Sanctuary and while I never knew them personally, I ended up kind of getting into them back in 1987-88 and even saw them open for Megadeth in ‘88. Great band, but I could almost see the difficult path ahead back then as they were very out of step with what was about to take hold in the Seattle music scene. Produced by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, this album showcases a blend of power, thrash, doom, and traditional heavy metal. It is characterized by Warrel Dane’s distinctive, high-pitched vocal style, which adds a unique theatrical intensity to the songs. Masterfully engineered by Terry Date and with cover artwork by Ed Repka.

1988 US pressing on Epic Records. Bought this brand new in ‘88 and it’s still in pristine condition.
