Amorphis - Tuonela (1998)

Tuonela marks a significant departure from the band’s earlier death metal roots. Drawing heavily from Finnish mythology and inspired by the Kalevala, the album blends progressive rock, doom, and folk influences with a strong emphasis on melody and atmosphere. The use of clean vocals by Pasi Koskinen, alongside occasional growls, complements the album’s rich, textured soundscapes, which include touches of saxophone and traditional instruments. It’s a good album, but nears the end of my initial interest the band… that said, I may need to look a little further as they have continued down a progressive folk metal path that seems quite interesting.

2023 US reissue from Relapse Records. Nice!
