Out of Reach is one of Can’s most divisive albums and a notable departure from their earlier, more experimental sound. It is the only album recorded without the involvement of bassist and founding member Holger Czukay, whose absence is felt in the album’s more conventional approach. Instead, Rosko Gee and Rebop Kwaku Baah take a central role, bringing a funkier, jazz-infused style to the band’s music. I generally like this music, but this is a stark departure from what got me into Can in the first place. I don’t necessarily listen to this one a lot, but do like a lot of the jams going on with the album.
2014 IS reissue from Spoon Records/Mute.
