Mental Vortex stands as a pivotal moment in progressive thrash metal, showcasing the band’s evolution toward a more refined and intricate sound. While still rooted in the technical precision that defined their earlier work, the album incorporates slower tempos, atmospheric elements, and a darker, more sophisticated tone. Thrash Metal was more or less running out of steam in the early 1990s and (for me) it’s unsurprising that Coroner would pivot to more progressive and experimental modes. Crucial and engaging, this record crushes..
2018 European reissue from Noise/BMG. Really nice reissue and thankfully a bit more lush than the Century Media reissues which were good, but painfully minimal.
