Somewhere In Time marked a notable shift in the band’s sound with the introduction of guitar synthesizers, reflecting a futuristic and atmospheric tone that distinguished it from their previous records. So much so that I wasn’t sure if I was into this record when it initially came out, but I came around after resetting my unrealistic teenage thrasher expectations. The album features themes of time travel, escapism, and a sense of existential reflection, inspired in part by science fiction and the pressures of the band’s extensive touring schedule. The Derek Riggs album art features Eddie in a cyberpunk-inspired, dystopian cityscape, packed with references to the band’s history, making Somewhere In Time a stand-out album amongst the band’s catalog.
1986 US pressing on EMI/Capitol Records. I bought this brand new upon release in 1986 and it’s still in excellent condition.
