Having started as a death metal act, mainman Christofer Johnsson had gradually evolved the band toward more epic, symphonic metal territories. Their 1996 Theli album indicates the impending change, but Vovin marks a turning point in Therion’s evolution, leaning fully into the orchestral and operatic elements that define their signature sound. Featuring lush symphonic arrangements, choir vocals, and intricate melodies, the album weaves a rich tapestry of mythological and esoteric themes. Johnsson primarily had to execute the recording session on his own with session musicians supporting, the album is quite amazing! I’m not even a big symphonic metal guy, but mid-period Therion for me, is a staunch exception. Excellent.
2022 Austrian pressing from Napalm Records as part of a nice reissue series for the band’s discography on vinyl. Not cheap, but they are great. Came with a Vovin patch too, as seen in the gatefold photo, bottom right.
