The Black Flux, the second album by Virus, was released in 2008 and cemented the band’s reputation as purveyors of dark, experimental soundscapes. Building on the surreal foundation of their debut, Carheart, this album leans into a more refined yet still unpredictable fusion of dissonant guitar melodies, jazz-like rhythms, and an otherworldly atmosphere. Carl-Michael Eide’s (Czral) haunting and hypnotic vocals weave through the complex layers of music, delivering cryptic lyrics that evoke a sense of existential unease. The Black Flux is both heavier and more focused than its predecessor, capturing a unique balance between chaos and structure that remains deeply unsettling yet captivating some sixteen years after its release. A masterpiece, in my humble opinion.
2017 Norwegian reissue from Duplicate Records.
