Brian Eno’s Ambient 4: On Land departs from traditional melodic structures, and instead creates immersive soundscapes that evoke specific geographical locations and atmospheres. Eno incorporates a blend of synthesizer-based notes, nature and animal recordings, and other sounds, many of which were unused, collected recordings from previous albums and sessions. In many way, Eno’s process with this album is almost the blueprint for how a lot of ambient music would be constructed in the future. An incredibly important work and easily one of the most enjoyable ambient records I have ever heard.
2018 European repress on Virgin EMI Records.
