Gun (1968)

Gun’s self titled debut is another one of those crazy pre-Sabbath proto-metal releases that really stands out. Featuring brothers Adrian and Paul Gurvitz, the album is best known for its hit single “Race with the Devil,” a blistering track driven by fuzzy guitar riffs, energetic vocals, and a sense of urgency that captured the spirit of the time. Gun is not only a strong debut but also a significant record in the evolution of hard rock, setting the stage for the heavier sounds that would emerge in the 1970s. The amazing cover is one of Roger Dean’s early cover art paintings and it’s quite unique amongst the type of work he’s known for. Amazing record.

1973 US repress from Epic Records.
