After a decade long hiatus, Ralf Hubert roars Mekong Delta back into existence with Lurking Fear. The album is a masterclass in technical thrash metal, blending blistering riffs, complex arrangements, and an almost cinematic sense of tension. While the classical elements are fully present, this is very much a progressive thrash metal album and it demonstrates a killer return to form. The only drawback with this one is the production, which is decidedly not dynamic, with minimal bass or room for the individual instruments to shine through… which is a big deal considering the incredible playing the band has laid down here. However, even production shortcomings don’t spoil this record for me. The songs, the playing, and the vibe as all so damn good!
