The First Monument album is a hidden gem of early ’70s heavy psych with a raw, fuzzed-out energy that’s hard to resist. Packed with smokin’ riffs, swirling organs, and gritty vocals, the album oozes that trippy, slightly dark vibe, partly due to singer Steven Lowe’s professed interest in witchcraft and the occult. The LP has a loose, jammy feel that exudes an authentic early heavy psych sounds. Worth noting that Monument was an offshoot of a band called Zior, who put out two albums prior to this, changed their name and released this sole album before dipping into obscurity. Regardless, this is an excellent slab of tunes.
2011 Spanish reissue from Guerssen. Picked this up used recently while working in Chicago and couldn’t be happier.
