Watershed is often considered a pivotal work in Opeth’s discography, marking a transitional phase between their heavier death metal roots and their later foray into progressive rock. The album is characterized by its dynamic contrasts, blending crushingly heavy passages with delicate acoustic interludes and lush, melodic arrangements. The band would go on to further evolve towards a progressive rock direction after this, and that’s fantastic, but this one is a nice last hit of the band’s fully developed progressive death metal sound before another drastic shift.
2018 European reissue from Roadrunner Records/Music On Vinyl.
