Tomita - Firebird (1975)

Firebird offers a fascinating reimagining of Stravinsky’s classic ballet suite, blending the grandeur of the original composition with the innovative possibilities of 1970s electronic music. Through the use of synthesizers, Isao Tomita transforms the orchestral textures into something entirely new, creating a soundscape that feels both ethereal and futuristic. Side B includes excellent renditions of Debussy and Mussorgsky as well. The album is wildly engaging in how it blends classical music with mid-1970s modern electronic musical directions. Took me a little to take in Tomita’s vibe at first, but when it hits you, all is good.

1976 US pressing on RCA Red Seal.
