Isao Tomita’s The Planets is an electronic reimagining of Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite. Utilizing a Moog synthesizer, Tomita transforms the original compositions into a series of rich, otherworldly soundscapes, very much as he did with Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition a year prior. Of course, The Planets is a very different kind of piece, but it’s very nicely done.
1976 US pressing on RCA Red Seal and it’s great. Much thanks to my friend Jarrod for turning me onto Tomita a few years back… I’m in!
