Left Hand Path stands as a defining statement in the development of Swedish death metal, introducing a raw, crushing sound that would influence countless bands in the genre. The album’s hallmark is its buzzsaw guitar tone, achieved through the heavily distorted Boss HM-2 pedal, which creates an overwhelming, almost mechanical wall of sound. Beneath the aggression, the compositions exhibit a developed sense of structure and atmosphere, with eerie melodic undercurrents adding a sinister edge to the relentless riffing. As the thrash metal movement would down at the end of the 1980s and death metal emerged, this is one of those crucial albums to set the stage for the new era… of course I went from thrash to ambient & experimental, so didn’t catch up on all the metal I missed until the early 2000s, its seems.
2017 US/EU reissue from Earache Records.
