Franco Battiato - Clic (1974)

Clic is one of Franco Battiato’s most abstract and experimental works, moving further into avant-garde territory with an emphasis on ambient textures, electronic manipulation, and orchestral elements. Departing from conventional rock structures, the album explores a cinematic and almost surreal soundscape, blending synthesizers with classical influences and moments of stark minimalism. While I fell into Battiato’s first three albums easily enough, I hesitated with this one for a while, thinking it was going to be all experimentation and very little music… but I was happily incorrect. Maybe not for everyone, but Clic is a weird and beautiful album.

2018 US pressing from Superior Viaduct. This particular pressing seems to be getting slogged for being noisy and dimpled, but I bought my copy used and after a run through the ultrasonic cleaner, it plays perfectly (no dimples either). Maybe I got lucky?
