Amber is the second studio album by British electronic duo Autechre. Departing from the more beat-driven compositions of their debut, Incunabula, this album delves into ambient and atmospheric territories, emphasizing texture and mood over rhythm. Tracks like “Foil” and “Silverside” envelop listeners in eerie, minimalist soundscapes, while “Montreal” introduces a metallic resonance with its skittering drum patterns and subdued melodies. The beatless compositions “Nine” and “Yulquen” evoke contemplative spaces, seemingly drawing influence from Brian Eno’s ambient works. I have a love/hate relationship with Auteche, but Amber is all goodness for me.
2016 UK reissue on Warp Records. Literally just got this at a record show today, so this is my first spin of the LP… graduating from the CD copy I’ve had since the mid 1990s.
