Born Again is a serious anomaly in Black Sabbath’s catalog and remains both despised and held in high regard. Following their split with Ronnie James Dio, Sabbath is struggling a bit. The story is that Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan (old friends and drinking buddies), had a night out and decided that Gillan would become the new frontman for Black Sabbsth. Bill Ward returns and the band kicks out the Born Again album to mixed reviews, even Ian Gillan was not a big fan of how the album turned out. Still, the band toured heavily with Gillan singing Ozzy and Dio era songs in the set and the band was even including “Smoke On The Water” as part of their encore set. This band sounded killer live! Alas, Deep Purple reformed and Gillan returned to his main band, and Sabbath seemed to be done. Regardless, this album is an absolute masterpiece, in my humble opinion.
1983 US pressing from Warner Bros. Records. Looks like my copy was a Columbia House record club pressing, haha! Sounds fantastic.
