Boris - Akuma No Uta (2003)

Akuma No Uta captures Boris at a crossroads between sludge metal, psychedelic rock, and experimental noise. While this may sound wild for most bands… this is Boris. The album opens with a droning, meditative track before launching into thunderous riffs and distorted grooves, drawing influence from bands like Melvins and early Sabbath. The band shifts between minimalism and overwhelming sonic force, reflecting their complete disregard for genre limitations and traditional concepts of structure and composition…. And I mean this as accolades, as Boris does it better than most. Fantastic album!

This is the second release cover as a direct reference to Nick Drake’s Bryter Layter album and (insanely) also extended to match the exact 39 minute running time of Drake’s album. The original is a minimalist design and the third variant is a tribute to Venom’s Welcome To Hell of all things, but makes sense as the album’s title Akuma No Uta translates to “The Devil’s Song”.

2019 US reissue from Third Man Records.
