Dream Evil continues to develop Dio’s unique sound and epic heavy metal with fantasy themes: Musically, this isn’t a big departure from Sacred Heart or anything before it. For me, the most notable changes are a strong push to more accessible (radio friendly) songs and the difference in guitar styles from Vivian Campbell to new guitarist Craig Goldy… and not to shit on Goldy or anything, he’s great, but he’s not quite the same caliber as Campbell who’s playing and overall sound was perfectly matched for what the Dio band was built around. Ronnie James Dio sounds phenomenal, of course, and the band is largely point, so not like there’s much to complain about here. Solid album.
1987 US pressing from Warner Bros. Records. Only recently picked this up and pretty happy about it. On the flip side, this is the latest Dio solo album I own to date, so I no more Dio LPs to spin for the moment.
