Heritage finds Opeth moving away from their death metal roots toward a sound steeped in 1970s progressive rock. Featuring vintage keyboard tones, jazz-influenced drumming, and clean, melodic vocals, the album embraces a more atmospheric and introspective approach. To me, this album is bold and fascinating. I think a lot of metal folks struggled when this came out, but I am equal parts metalhead and progressive rock lunatic, so this is merely a shift from one love to another on my radar. Great album, if not a transformative statement of intent.
2025 European reissue from Music On Vinyl. This pressing sounds amazing on my hi-fi.
