Terje Rypdal / David Darling - Eos (1984)

Eos was recorded in Oslo’s Talent Studio in May 1983 and is comprised of seven tracks that blend ambient textures with jazz improvisation. Rypdal’s use of electric guitar and synthesizer, alongside Darling’s acoustic and electric cello, creates a soundscape that is both atmospheric and introspective. It opens with an unexpected, and mercifully brief, rock guitar solo track titled “Laser” which is the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard on a Rypdal album and then plunges into the deeply introspective title track, Eos” which sets the tone for the rest of the album. An emotive and beautiful collaboration that perfectly highlights the unique playing of both Rypdal and Darling.

1984 US pressing on ECM (with a promo sticker). I’ve become a massive fan of Rypdal over the years and very happy to have found this copy at Hi-Voltage Records in Tacoma, WA just yesterday.
